great info.
i live in a medium, size city-5 million people.(not in the u.s)
i was told to go to n.a by a counselor.
i found it very male dominated/hierarchical,with the elder men revered just for been good talkers/sharers
& amassing clean time.
i needed female 1-1 therapy & psych treatment(pre-mania) & yoga, this wasnt suggested at all.
there were dominant males with alot of time up who prey on the
younger new females.
i.e let homeless 20-30 yr olds stay at there homes etc
two male 13steppers even set up a private rehab.with no female therapists!
so is not surprising that not many females hang around the meetings long in this city
-many females go interstate to bigger stronger groups.
theres approx 80%males-20%females ratio at meetings these days.
is such a pity,as the emotional empathy & support(not so much the steps for me ) at meetings was very helpful.
the a.a fellowship i now go to sometimes is much bigger & i found it much less predatory-although im
much older /wiser now.
the smaller the meetings.the more control/power the leaders have
many good pple but yes there needs to be more proactive/shunning of predators.
keep safe.go to meetings with a girlfriend or taxi money if vulnerable. j.m
j.m. Welcome. What city, country are you in? I think all 12 step meetings need warning signs, warning literature, posters and workshops to address the rampant predatory behavior.
AA World Headquarters also needs to tell the public at large as well. AAa is not the Gold Standard it like to think it is.
