6 Million dollars a year is paid out to employees and pension in Alcoholics Anonymous…did you know that?

Like no other non profit.

How do they fly around the world? How much is each of the 12 individuals paid in NY get? Wouldn’t you like to know where your dollars are going? Who does the audit? Don’t we have a right as the public and members to see this paperwork?

All the tax returns are available online. See if you can follow the money.

I spent 27 years in a group which met on weekdays in a church.

The group paid no rent to the church and daily collections ran between $25 and $100. When I was treasurer of the group, it had over $70,000 in cash in the bank and, as a regular practice, gave away literature and an annual holiday dinner to the members. The group collected a “tip” at the holiday dinner and gave it to the church staff. The group’s “tip” for 12 months of free rent was less than $150 to be divided by 6-10 people.

A group of AA members decided that we should have a local “intergroup” to put up a website to help people find meetings. The intergroup had a paid staff which it supported through contributions from local groups. The intergroup staff decided to sell literature and medallions at a mark-up “to support” the mission.

My group’s treasurer wanted an intergroup job, and began to buy literature and medallions from intergroup, rather than online through AAWS. Within a year, the reserve was gone, literature was sold (not given away), and he had a job and a pension unwittingly paid for by the group.

Attempts by the succeeding treasurer to correct the problem led to stone-walling by the intergroup organization.

It’s not just AA, AAWS or GSO who makes money from your donations. Your moneys fund all kinds of sleights-of-hand by kindred associations who are set up to give an otherwise unemployable, addicted to AA and self-interested sponges a job.

It’s a donation. Don’t donate and see what happens when you really do make it for fun and for free,

Who are these 12 individuals in New York? How do I know how much money they’re getting and where they’re getting it from? You say the tax returns are available online, but if so, why don’t you post the links to them?

    Hi Liz- Welcome-

Are you still in AA? Phyllis Haliday is one. She is the General Service right now. She retunrs no phone calls. I guess she’s above us. Mary C is another. She calls us back. I guess she is the face of AA in NY. Let me find you a link . I’ll be back.

Thanks, Massive. No, I’m not in AA anymore; I’m in SOS. I found this site through their webpage. On a much smaller scale, I used to go to an Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting where the treasurer confessed she had stolen the money. Other members of the group voted to let her continue being treasurer without even demanding she pay the money she had already stolen back. Well, surprise, surprise, she stole the money again!

AA Traditions would lead folks to believe that only members of the group passing the basket would make a donation…..unfortunately this is not what happens…….the groups allow all present o put money in their basket – even from involuntary attendees. Goups pass the basket even when they do not need the money.

I think it best to never give any AA group any money for any reason.

johnlight – I agree. ALso I was shocked when I learned that AA makes 6 million from selling their BB to strangers in Rehab and jail and treatment etc. All those non members buying a book most will never read.

I think you are confusing AA with a corporation using the AA name. So far as i have heard and read AA is a fellowship if men and women, it does not have any offices and it does not publish anything.

AA is not a fellowship anymore. That AA is long gone. AA today is filled with 60-79% coerced individuals . There are 3 non profit corps that all exist s as very viable bus in NYC. The AA Grapevine. The GS Board Of AA, INC. AA world services inc. Big bucks .
