  1. Mary,
    great post and so true.
“No one would think it was a good idea to empty the jail and send them all to the local church to deal with, yet how different is that from what is happening in AA.”

This is a REALLY good point. One that AA in NY and every aspect of General Service and my Westside District should look at.

IF all the big meetings where the DUI court appointed and rehabs like you mentioned come to, held business meetings, voted to stop signing court cards, attendance would drop in half or more.

This would be a very good thing.

  2. the way I see it is that this guy is a flat out criminal and should not be sent or let lose in an AA or NA meeting where there is no safety measures set up, no sargent at arms, no bouncer, lots of young vulnerable regular alcoholics seeking recovery in a genuine spirit.

These men and women are targeting 12 step meetings for theft, sexual harassment, sometimes rape adn now robbery which resulted in Hideous murder.

google Herbert Tracy WHite Murder in Los ANgeles.
WE /AA is not equipped to hand the unbalanced criminals and DUI’s sent to our meetings.
And alot of old timers starting when sober members reach their ten years leave AA. I am not far behind.
Too dangerous for me now too.

    1. The lay people of AA aren’t equipped to handle any of it. Criminals get shuttled off into AA as if untrained people can somehow fix them as well as folks with mental health issues (I was thinking today about a sweet friend who hung herself years ago because of horrific depression that AA couldn’t cure). I read about Mr. White, what happened to him is beyond wretched. No one should be put in that position, but good people are being put in harms way constantly. Now his family is left to deal with the loss. What a lot of people IN AA don’t see is that if it were declared unconstitutional for courts to send people to AA then WE would be safer. No one would think it was a good idea to empty the jail and send them all to the local church to deal with, yet how different is that from what is happening in AA.

One meeting I used to attend was packed to the gills every week, probably 150 people, until they voted to stop signing court and rehab papers. After that it’s a big night if they have 25 people there.

I don’t know if I could attend AA if it weren’t for the two groups I enjoy. So many groups are either focused on a particular guru old timer, chanting cult speak taught by the treatment centers (or the guru old timer), or over-run with people with bad motives looking for a sucker.

  3. I wonder if previously he has been sent to 12 step programs instead of receiving intensive mental health care because of the pervading feeling that if one has a drug or alcohol problem then that is their biggest problem and must be the one to be treated? The problem is, as I see it, that many, many people use substances to self-medicate mental illness; but the catch is that in the current culture so often once you are an addict that’s going to be all you are with all symptoms being considered related to the addiction. Not to mention the inaccessibility of mental health care in many places.
