  1. You might want to watch the movie “Deliver Us from Evil” by Amy Berg. Great Documentary on Sex Abuse scandal in Church in 2007.
I’m watching it again. It’s really done well.

  2. “Spiritual abuse is the misuse of a position of power, leadership, or influence to further the selfish interests of someone other than the individual who needs help. Sometimes abuse arises out of a doctrinal position. At other times it occurs because of legitimate personal needs of a leader that are being met by illegitimate means. Spiritually abusive religious systems are sometimes described as legalistic, mind controlling, religiously addictive, and authoritarian.”

  3. Main stream Christians are aware of the problems that can be caused when people use thier power of control for sexual or financial gain and are trying to put a stop to it. A book has even been written on it entitled “Faith That Hurts, Faith That Heals/Understanding the Fine Line Between Healthy Faith and Spiritual Abuse” by by Stephen Arterburn & Jack Felton. In it they highlight some of the disturbing trends that you have been seeing such as:

1.) Wants to be in complete control
2.) Speaks boldly about sinful behavior even when they are doing the same thing.
3.) Acts superior to those around them
4.) Changes God’s Word to fit own beliefs
5.) Seeks out people who are insecure and easily manipulated
6.) When uncovered will ask for forgiveness and appear sincere when doing so

If you are going to a AA/NA meeting at a Church and experience any of these while being sexually or financially abused, you may want to talk to the pastor or priest of the church and mention this book.
